My Rating: 3.9/5
There are four different Londons sharing a geographic location. When Black London missuses Magic the gates to travel between the different cities are sealed and only the Antari – blood magicians known as Travelers – may freely cross from one London to the other. Only the rulers of each London know of the existence of the other cities. When an exchange goes wrong dangerous magic is set free and Kell, the Antari working for the ruler of white London, must figure out a way to stop it.
There is no doubt that VE Schwab is an AMAZING writer. The world she creates is absolutely superb and original. Her writing is stunning and despite there being 4 different Londons it is very easy to follow the story.
I must say I really struggled rating this book because although the world had me completely mersmerized, I felt absolutely nothing for the characters. I found them to be one dimensional and I didn’t grow attached to any of them; I wish they could have been a little bit more developed. As I said in another review, I don’t have to love the characters but I want to feel like I know them, I want to root for or against them and in this book I simply didn’t feel the chemistry.
With this being said, I would like to add that regardless of what I believe is a lack of character development, the world Schwab creates is so unique that I had to finish the book even if I felt detached from the story the first few chapters.
You might or might not get into this book but no one can deny Schwab’s genius for world creating.
I will at some point get to the second book of the series but I am not in a hurry.
