Katy and her mom move to West Virginia and Katy finds out that her new neighbours are… drumroll…. aliens! Katy befriends Dee, sister of Demon Black, and although all aliens are gorgeous Daemon is the hottest of them all; every girl drools over him and every guy wants to be him.
Aliens are not supposed to mix with humans but Dee is really fond of Katy and asks Daemon to try to get along with her. Daemon is a constant jerk to Katy and they spend most of their time bickering but they both feel extremely attracted to each other and when Katy discovers what Daemon really is things get a bit complicated.
At first I wasn’t really into the story, I felt like the plot was too obvious and the writing too basic, but we (or I at least) usually pick up this type of book for the romance and I chose right!
The story gave me some serious Twilight feels in the beginning: rude and distant boy, check; group of sexy and gorgeous non-humans, check; high school drama, check. Even Armentrout noticed the similarities and made a reference to Twilight: “Will you show me what you really look like? You don’t sparkle, do you?” But Daemon’s character ends up being more than simply stronger than humans and a cocky ass. He cares about his family and wants to protect them all, and he also wants to protect Katy. I love Katy, she has a strong character and doesn’t take anyone’s shit, but my favorite thing in the book is Dee’s and Katy’s relationship. It is genuine and loving, and it never mixes with Katy’s and Daemons’ love-hate relationship.
As the plot develops new rules of the world are introduced: Aliens like the Black family are made of light, but these are not the only aliens taking refuge in our planet; Aurums are made of darkness and want to suck the light and abilities out of aliens like Daemon. And the government is aware of everything. All these extra factors add something special to the story and – other than Daemon being bae – they are what made me want to continue with the saga.
